Edinburgh COVID-19 Lockdown Directory Part II - bakery and restaurants

Here is Part II, focussed on local bakeries and restaurants which I hope will help you to get through this period of lockdown whilst also supporting small businesses in and around Edinburgh.

I’ve also updated Part I with even more food and drink shopping options, so do check back.

Please feel free to let me know who I’ve missed, there must be loads, and I’ll try my best to keep this updated.

Stay safe, stay home, and bon appétit

BAKERIES

Company Bakery make really excellent sourdough, usually supplying Edinburgh restaurants and cafes. They deliver to North Edinburgh, probably expanding. Sign up via their website to be notified when they come to you.

The Pastry Section in Stockbridge are selling their utterly beautiful (and delicious) cakes online for collection from the shop on Fridays 10-12.

Cuckoos bakery edinburgh popcorn celebration cake

are still baking their extravagant celebration cakes (no cupcakes just now), so if you have a birthday during lockdown, all is not lost. Baked to order, free no-contact delivery on orders over £35 within Edinburgh bypass

Mimi’s Bakehouse now offers a selection of their most popular cakes dispatched via DPD for £5.50 next day delivery in the UK mainland. Perfect for a care package or just to keep all for yourself.

Twelve Triangles are open for collection (from Brunswick St and Portobello) and delivery to EH1-12 and EH15, order before 8pm for delivery next day between 10am-5.30pm. Minimum order £15. Söderberg bakery is still open serving their sourdough and Swedish bakes, they can deliver in Morningside, Stockbridge, Bruntsfield, Marchmont & Old Town on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays. They also have granola, jam and coffee so you can recreate the brunch experience at home.

Smith Gertrude wine bar Edinburgh

in Stockbridge are offering you the wine and cheese bar experience at home. You can order their wines, Company Bakery bread, cheese and charcuterie boxes, and of course more wine. Free delivery on orders over £15 , Thursday to Sunday. I cannot wait to be able to sit in their sunny window seat with a glass of something interesting and accidentally eat all the cheese.

RESTAURANTS

Cater Edinburgh even better than a restaurant, get in touch with private chef Barry, who will arrange to fill your freezer with all your favourite things. He can design a menu of dishes you’ll love and deliver up to 50 meals, contact free to your home. Prices start at £140 for 30 portions. I’ve enjoyed his food at events and it really is excellent.

The Wee Restaurant in South Queensferry is now #WeeDeliveries, and have come up with a menu for you to heat and serve at home. They are also selling meat packs from their butcher Henderson’s Prime Meat as well as wines, beers, and cider from their usual suppliers. Order Monday to Wednesday for delivery/collection Saturday 10-12. Refrigerated, the food should keep for up to three days. I’m seriously tempted to get their dauphinoise for two and isolate from my family in the shed for a wee feast by myself. Free delivery within North Queensferry, also delivering to Inverkeithing, Dalgety Bay, Aberdour, Rosyth, Charlstown, Limekilns, Dunfermline, Cairneyhill, Crossford, South Queensferry and Dalmeny.

Stac Polly restaurant on Dublin St has come up with a special seasonal menu for collection or delivery (£2) between 5-9pm, and are also offering a discount if you want to order several meals in advance. They have a short wine list to go with the menu or you can order from the full restaurant wine list with a ‘reverse corkage’ discount of £10 off list price. Not only is their food delicious and based on fresh, seasonal, local ingredients, but they are also the kindest team in the world. Many years ago, when the ceiling fell in at our wedding venue (long story) only a fortnight before the event, they sat down and spent almost an hour with me trying to find other possibilities. I hope this is a big success and tides them through this period.

Aurora in Leith is one of my favourite brunch spots. They have a menu available for delivery and collection 5-8.30, Wednesday to Sunday and it looks reasonably priced for expertly cooked, local and seasonal ingredients. Their spicy Korean chicken stew with kimchi fried rice sounds wonderful, or how about a comforting Beef Bourguignon with Gruyére & thyme potatoes, both at £10.

Wedgewood are also proposing a restaurant food to eat at home offering, check back soon for details.

Razzo Pizza Napoletana in Leith now does delivery and collection. They are kindly offering 50% discount via their website to NHS workers with code NHS50RAZZO. They are on Deliveroo, Just Eat, and Uber Eats, or you can order direct (which usually means the restaurant keeps a higher % of the money.

Civerinos Slice are still very much in action. Order via their app, Deliveroo, or call 0131 225 4026. Why not add on a pay-if-forward pizza to your order which they will deliver to NHS staff at local hospitals.

The ever popular Dough pizza (I’ve not tried them yet) are open for collection from their South Clerk St shop and delivery Fridays and Saturday.

Cutting Chai in Leith serves tapas style Indian food to rave reviews. They are now offering contact free delivery or collection. Thanks Danni for this one.

Bombay Spice in Leith are delivering their curries in EH1, EH4-8 and EH15, order online.

Thai Bowl on Leith Walk are still open for delivery and collection

Dirty Burgers are on Uber Eats and Just Eat, possibly doing their own deliveries soon too. Wagyu burgers and other fancy drunk food delivered to your door.

Hakataya on Rose St (who also own Tangs on Candlemaker Row) are currently offering 20% off on Deliveroo. They may get their own delivery up and running soon. Decent Ramen and Sushi. Thanks Lisa for the heads up.

Finally, not really a restaurant, but Cook, the makers of fancy ready meals, are still going strong if you want a break from cooking. They are offering home delivery for vulnerable customers and NHS workers, and click and collect from their Morningside store. They have stores nationwide so this could also be a good option to send some love to friends and family who you can’t visit just now.

ONE LAST THING…

Food banks are struggling, if you’d like to help, you can donate to the Trussell Trust here, or support Edinburgh Cyrenians with their homelessness outreach serving the most vulnerable members of our community.

Sadly the wonderful Bearded Bakers are closed for now, but they have kindly shared the recipe for their vegan sourdough cinnamon bun recipe in their Instagram highlights to tide you over until they re-open.

Mademoiselle Macaron is closed to new orders until 14 April while they catch up, check back soon to get your mail order macaron fix.

101 Bakery currently closed until they can source ingredients again, hopefully back open by the end of April for all your Chelsea bun needs.
